Expected Benefits in local and international level

  1. Breaking into a new field by extending the use of the sole Greek accelerator from just nuclear physics to include also atomic collisions physics and related technologies using existing state-of-the-art equipment at an extremely low cost.
  2. Training of young researchers in new specialized atomic particle technologies such as highly charged ion sources, transport of ion beams, charged particle spectroscopies, detection and data acquisition and analysis systems.
  3. Participation in the international scientific community with new results obtained using state-of-the-art electron spectrometers
  4. Rallying together of locally (e.g. in Greece) existing scientists that have worked in the past in the field of accelerator-based atomic physics abroad and who are participating in this proposal
  5. Upgrading of the only existing accelerator facility into a user facility for university researchers and widening its scope of operation into new areas related to atomic physics.
  6. Allow for a more substantial and dynamic participation of Greek scientists in many of the new cutting edge European and world-wide science initiatives including research at:
    • New storage rings such as FAIR, SPARC and SPIRAL2,
    • X-ray Free-electron laser facilities such as XFEL and LCLS,
    • Fusion research such as ITER,
    • The European Space Agency ESA
